It’s no secret that change triggers fear, uncertainty and anxiety. Depending on somebody’s lived experiences, change can activate their stress response. Leaders may think they’re introducing a simple organizational change but what they often overlook is how changes can threaten people’s sense of control and safety - especially if impacts job security.

How executives and leaders support teams through any transition can make or break the new program/strategy. This includes: how the change is communicated; when the change is introduced; how employee feedback informs the change; what tools and resources are there to support middle management; what training is available to help teams adapt; and most importantly - whether leaders employees feel safe to express their thoughts and feelings.

This is why trauma-informed change management strategies are so important. Rigid, linear changes mandated from the top are not it, especially if you value empowered teams. That’s because they reinforce oppressive systems and harmful power dynamics that force people to obey - not by choice but out of fear.
